And we back. All new WhatYouWant Radio for your listening pleasure, stuffed full of the new and the old, the rare and the common or garden funk. Kicking off this week with the fruits of a serious digging session in Vancouver and another in Seattle, you’ve got six straight up hiphop classics in a row, all unearthed on vinyl after languishing unloved in the dusty stacks. A massive Herbie Hancock bassline is propping up King Bee’s ‘Back by Dope Demand’, while the equally massive bassline from Talking Heads’ ‘Once in a Lifetime’ bookends the selection. The filling: rare and unreleased from the slight but deep Lakim Shabazz; Kings of Pressure; Tuff Crew; and the legendary Organized Konfusion. Put that in in your 1988-1992 pipe and smoke it people.

More beats from Romare and something new from Bullion, before some lovely soul courtesy of the excellent Quantic and Alice Russell – new album Look Around the Corner is essential if you like Will’s beats and Alice’s voice: mmmm. Micatone also come correct with the standout track from their recent LP, and then total newness from the Hawthorne Headhunters – one for fans of Sa-Ra, Outkast or Plantlife.

Syncro makes use of an Alexander O’Neal sample, and Soft Rocks take it down a notch (can’t believe I haven’t played a track of their 2011 album yet, well worth a listen) before we go with the singer-songwriters – new from Peter Broderick, and old from Nick Drake and Leon Russell. There’s even time for a quick tribute to Levon Helm who passed away last week – I selected the stonecold classic ‘The Weight’.

The final part of the show goes from dark to light. Bark Psychosis give us a track off their second album with some fine trumpet, Kindness drops ‘House’ from his new album, the excellently titled ‘World, you need a Change of Mind’, and then Ital gives us disco-weirdness on Planet Mu. The Fort Romeau track is great, and then it’s something new from the Idjut Boys who are giving us a song for Kenny.

To finish: a missed track from Erdbeerschnitzel and then 12 minutes of minimal from Luomo – I totally missed this over ten years ago and now I’m on the bus. Enjoy that one!

And there’s more to enjoy on the WYWR website – shows from Adamantium Trax and VS Radio, and loads of up to the moment blog posts directing you to great albums, free downloads and videos of men doing dance routines dressed as pirates. Hell YES.

Until next time…
