Good lord people. Good lord. The summer is out there somewhere lurking and WhatYouWant Radioshow#45 is going to try to tease it out goddammit. Sit back, open the patio doors and windows and pretend that summer is here and you need a soundtrack for your drinks…
Starting this week with jazz. Yes, jazz, the sound of the summer in the 50s n’stuff. Cannonball Adderley on sax, Joe Zawinul on keys, Jessie Jackson somewhere else on the album (‘Country Preacher’) no doubt telling us that we are somebody. It rocks, and has the great hummin’ riff that is used to such great effect by Anthony Hill, aka YZ, on the alltimestonecoldclassic that is Crocodile Dundee. Remember, he knows your manager’s way of putting out your plastic…
Beats next, African sampling from Debruit, loveliness from Jesse Futerman, Ta-Ku off of the new Tall Black Guy compilation on Bastard Jazz and then, finally, the return of Je$u$ - who I know some people have been waiting for for a helluva long time. He doesn’t disappoint.
Onra got more of the same for you, but then if the same is this good, let’s grab it. Clams Casino brings the smiles with the Lost Boys-sampling ‘Unchain Me’ (and yes, the entire ‘Instrumentals Vol 2′ is still available on free download – click the playlist below) and then we go way down under to New Zealand’s Black Seeds who do a nice line in fonk methinks.
Jeff Phelps brings his 1980s keyboard for some downtempo sweetness (do get the ‘Personal Space’ compilation on Numero Group if you ain’t already) and then we go jazz/weirdness with the Cinematic Orchestra and something new from The Invisible. Next up you should get into your car and drive around LA at 3am to the Chromatics, and then you should go to the club that’s inevitably open and dance to LA Vampires by Octo Octa. Lost Boys samples AND LA Vampires in one show – that’s WYWR right there.
The final part of the show takes the tempo into slow disco and Balearic. Lovelock get the Morgan Geist treatment, The Walls get a visit from John Tejada and then Psychemagik do Fleetwood Mac while the Mac aren’t looking. Fleetwood Mac, surely the most-played artist on WYWR? Weird.
Still, we’re not done – something new on Sccucci Manucci from Deadly Sins, a lovely soulful boogie groover from Kon and Amir’s BBE comp of Brooklyn stuff, then French language danceability from Bottin feat. Jupiter. Just time for something off the Retrospective Records comp before the final track – a true treat as it is twenty years ago since Pete Rock and CL Smooth released ‘Mecca and the Soul Brother’, one of the mightiest hiphop albums of all time. For you, T.R.O.Y. – it never loses its punch.
Enjoy it all, leave some comments on the Soundcloud and, most of all, if you in the area you gotsta hit the launch party in The Hague on the 28th. If ain’t in The Hague then you 100% gotsta be checking the blog and our new Tumblr. And Twitter. And feed the hell back yo’, we love to hear you!
