Good Lord, sweet Aretha, Luther and El-Producto we kick off in fine uplifting style this month with the Gospel uproar of Toronto’s Dead Horse Beats, great EP all made from samples of old-timey church hollerin’ and just a little bit classic in places especially the almighty ‘I’ll Take Jesus For Mine’.
After that, the long awaited return of one of the master lyricists in all rap-time Aesop Rock. Plenty of brilliance on the new album ‘Skelethon’ we’ve got the metal edged funk of ZZZ top – production and rhymes totally on point.
Next up a little titillation of a track from the Madlib and Freddie Gibbs EP on Stonesthrow. What can you say about Madlib, every time man, every time. Then a nice woozy, abstract, type a thing by a posse of Soundcloud luminaries referring to themselves in pure what-it-says-on-the-tin style as Supercollab. Solid beats and clever flows top to tail that even invoke Charles Babbage at one point! All hail geeks.
Keeping it Hip Hop with Baltimore’s Rome Cee next, delivering a nice flow over a classic Primo beat, then an instrumental from the seemingly ever present Tall Black Guy (we dig him at WYWR cos he has a whole heap of broken beat riddims going on in his noggin and we always like to keep it strictly West London wherever possible!)
After TBG we slow it right down with some seriously beautiful jazz inflected joints – one from Ohbliv and the first of two selections from the sublime ‘Rain & Dust EP’ by Constrobuz.
Then because I haven’t stop listening to it since my girl got the title tattooed on her good self and reminded me how beautiful a song it was – ‘Equipoise’ by Stanley Cowell. Next one I discovered recently while rooting around on the web for pictures of Bernard Purdie for our new tumblr (oops slipped it in there – http://whatyouwantradio.tumblr.com/) its’ Hummingbird and it’s some serious be-jazzed proggy blue-eyed soul nuts to be sure.
Keepin it mournful but with a swing, sad funk, grave-digger’s go-go maybe? Shouldn’t mock it because it’s by far and away my favourite track of the show ‘Deep Water’ by Tentacle. You know it knocks when your 12 year old nephew hits it up on Soundcloud with the comment ‘dope tune’ YES good taste is genetic and there is my proof!!
Moving along in a lighter in the air type of sway/sashay, its back for a second deep drink from Constrobuz, there is so much more worthy stuff out there for you if you are feeling this, his Soundcloud is a good place to start. Then we get into the Krts track from the new compilation Dead Beats Vol.1, top boy, we love Krts – proper songs, found sounds, great melodies always.
Next we begin to turn up the heat as cautiously as a skint grandma, firstly with a remix of Crewdson by Bambooman, and then with a rewiggle of Caroline by Citizens!, before going totally Chicago house revisionist with two modern dutchman called Chicago Shags and then the real mccoy trio of Rob Owens, Larry Heard and Ron Wilson, proper proto-everything business from 1988 under their Fingers Inc. guise, that’s the sound of me coming electronically out of puberty right there. After memory lane, we leave you via the future highway but driving in vintage cars; second to last is the ST Germain sounding house n jazz of Fantastic Man before we close with the filthy kick drums and rave sensibilities of WK7 on POWER HOUSE RECORDS!!!!

As ever, please take the time to support the artists up in here that make you lose your marbles a little bit, or get you through that shitty Monday morning journey to work with a smile on your gob, all links below or e us if you need more info.

More soon.
