Angry Beautiful that’s where it’s at, Gaslamp Killer kicks off the show with a track off his forthcoming LP on Ninja Tunes and I think he might have had a number of bad days on the trot or else he never has a bad day and he is channeling all the murders he never done. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson does his Omen thing all over it and bobs your uncle – huge! Next up, the return (again) of Nas, he don’t ‘alf talk some shit but he delivers it in a pretty compelling way and that’s enough for me, we’ve had ‘Nasty’ on rotation for ever at WYWR, so this is the other stand out number for me ‘A Queen’s Story’ which is also produced by the mighty Salaam Remi.
After that, some heavy headnod courtesy of Monk, not dead-piano-playing-beret-adorned-cosmic-overlord Thelonius this is a 23 year old beatmaker underling from Paris. Then a top top bit of hands-in-the-air wonkiness courtesy of the excellent Swarvy followed by some angular-jiggynuss from Soul Monk & Beat Gates and then the freebie off the new Substantial project, massive grower, with a gorgeous flip of Diana Ross ‘I Hear A Symphony’ by Oddisee on production duties.
Next, Infinite Quazar and Honks Burry deliver the New Jack Boogie (don’t worry I just made that up) shit in fine style leading us to the illuminated dancefloor where you may proceed to wear your cut off t-shirts and do the hustle to olivier Boogie’s edit of Joe Coleman, another midtempo biggun from the Superbreak camp’s new EP and then the so wrong it’s right massiveness of Magnetic Soul’s Anita Baker rework – ‘Love Suite’.
Don’t know when Kan Sano does the sleeping thing but it’s good for we, next track is a track from his Bennet Rhodes album, followed by the latest single from Jamire Williams’ Erimaj project – we got ‘Social Life’ with Chris Turner on vocals – deep.
Then some post-some-genre-or-something-or-other niceties from Robot Koch, Rain Dog and Dapb. After that a track from the gratuitously generous Rapohnelizenz Beattape vol.3, there are untold corkers on there but I’ve gone with Figub Brazlevic cos that’s the way I roll. Mala’s new project has mad buzz! single out at the moment and this is the best of those for me. Then the hugely splendid ‘Attention Seeker’ by Iron Galaxy – splendid – huge, and then the re-re-return of Scott Herren, this time under his Piano Overlord moniker, and pretty much back to Prefuse 73 brilliance he is n all.
Three left – ‘Trptych’ by Scientific, a new one from my beatmaker du jour Tentacle and then to finish up, got so excited a lil bit of wee came out, when The Album Leaf posted a DL from a new album due out in September, already feels like i’m sitting on the hallway door mat waiting for Roy Of The Rovers to get delivered, god I love music!
So that’s it, it’s been emotional ha! until the next one.
